Title : Advancing global nursing research through development and utilization of technical innovations

There are many emerging technologies that will change the practice of nursing in the coming decade. To discuss few like; IT enabled clinical governance of key performance indicators, m-health apps, telehealth, virtual reality, less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnosis and treatment; robotics;  electronic health records; and computerized physician/provider order entry and clinical decision support.
Clinical governance is a framework through which Organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services, safeguarding high standards by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish. The automation done to capture key performance indicators and how the triggers are used to identify any unreported incidents.
The virtual reality therapy is an artificial environment created by software and projected by capturing the user by sensor. The user will be projected in the screen as a disease free user. The person suspends the belief of presence of disease and accepts the real environment. When the brain is preoccupied with virtual environment, it does not perceive other stimuli as effective as it otherwise good. Studies conducted at Apollo College of Nursing, Chennai Using VRT

  1. Virtual Reality upon Pain, Anxiety among children with cancer
  2. Virtual Reality upon Pain and Sleep among adult cancer patients
  3.  Virtual Reality upon Depression, Anxiety and Stress among patients underwent CABG
  4. Virtual Reality upon quality of Sleep among elderly population
  5. Virtual Reality upon Cognition among patients with schizophrenia
  6. Virtual Reality upon quality of sleep among patients with schizophrenia
  7. Virtual Reality upon BP, Stress and Coping among patients with Hypertension

The virtual reality therapy helped to improve the co-ordination between mind and body. Exercise in virtual reality affects many regions in the nervous system and sets on the pleasure chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine that makes the person feel calm, happy and free. The benefits of virtual reality therapy include stimulation of learning, improvement in goal setting, social skills and decision making. It also improves self-esteem and level of cognition
Robotics, an emerging field in healthcare, will also greatly impact how nursing is practiced in the future. Areas of projected robotic growth include nanomedicine, bio mechatronics, and the use of robots as direct care providers.
Computerized physician/provider order entry (CPOE) is a clinical software application designed specifically for providers to write patient orders electronically rather than on paper. With CPOE, providers produce clearly typed orders, reducing medication errors based on inaccurate transcription.
It is nurses who will be called up to fill expanding roles and to master technological tools and information systems while collaborating and coordinating care across teams of health professionals. Nurse leaders must begin thinking now about how emerging technologies will change the practice of nursing and proactively create the educational models and leadership development programs necessary to assure that nurses will have the competencies they need to address these emerging technologies. It must be nurses who are at the forefront in planning for and preparing for these challenges.
