Title : Perception and constraints regarding job responsibilities of staff nurses in family health centres of Thiruvananthapuram district as perceived by various stake holders
The Family Health Centres are health care delivery service institutions of Local Self Government. Family Health Centres provide services based on principles such as universality, family-based, equitable & non-discriminative, comprehensive, ensuring financial protection, quality, rationality, portability and continuity of care, protection of patient rights, community participation, accountability, transparency and responsiveness. Nurses are identified as key providers in the management of patients in Family Health Centres. The present study was carried out to explore the perception and constraints regarding the job responsibilities of staff nurses in the Family Health Centres of Thiruvananthapuram district as perceived by various stakeholders. It was a qualitative study conducted over a period of six weeks among the staff nurses, medical officers and patients in Family Health Centres. The objective was to explore the perception and constraints regarding the job responsibilities of staff nurses in Family Health Centres of Thiruvananthapuram district. Purposive sampling was done to select participants for the study. 9 staff nurses were selected for an in-depth interview. 2 Focus Group Discussions were conducted among 11 medical officers and 15 patients. Data were collected using in-depth interview guide and Focus Group Discussion guide. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The main themes emerged out of the study were increased job responsibilities, perception regarding job responsibilities and constraints in performing job responsibilities. Identification of the constraints in performing the job responsibilities and finding solutions for overcoming these problems can improve the quality of care provided by the staff nurses.
