Title: Recommendations for Incorporating social determinants of health within nursing curricula

Abstract:

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are receiving increased national attention. Nursing curricula historically have focused on the mastery of clinical skills, while social justice and health equity have been relegated to courses like population health. This study was designed to identify gaps in nursing faculty knowledge and attitudes about SDOH and provide recommendations for incorporating them into nursing curricula.

Audience Take Away:

This presentation will provide insight into the knowledge and attitudes of nursing faculty related to the social determinants of health (SDOH). The goal of this presentation is to provide data and recommendations to foster collegial engagement and discussion regarding SDOH and how to successfully embed and thread SDOH teaching strategies across the curriculum.

Objectives:

  • Describe the social determinants of health and their relationship to nursing education
  • Identify nurse educators' knowledge and attitudes regarding SDOH
  • Evaluate recommendations for embedding and threading SDOH in nursing curriculum to shape nursing education policies and practices based on data
