Title: Building a high performance team: Enhancing delivery room emergency response through team resource management

Abstract:

Reducing maternal mortality is an important global issue. Most maternal deaths are preventable, and first aid capabilities and teamwork are essential. In response to the failure of emergency treatment for postpartum hemorrhage in our hospital, we organized a cross-departmental team including obstetrics and gynecology, pediatricians and nursing department , and used team resource management (TRM) to establish an emergency treatment process in the delivery room, with the goal of improving patient safety and quality of care. We analyzed the current situation in terms of the importance of first aid, skill strategy, and team management , and formulated specific improvement measures, including promoting on-the-job education and online courses for first aid, formulating division of labor procedures and mnemonics for first aid teams, planning high-fidelity TRM simulation training and team communication courses, and designing item inspection cards and drug cards to improve the efficiency of the use of first aid items and the completeness of preparation. The results were remarkable: the correct answer rate for obstetric emergency test increased from 62.9% to 92.7%, and the completeness rate of emergency process increased from 39.7% to 91.0%. Medical staff have significantly improved their understanding of their roles and teamwork, cross-unit communication has become smoother, and nurses are more familiar with emergency procedures and equipment use. The training results were successfully promoted to other obstetric wards, driving the improvement of the overall quality of care. The research results confirm that combining team resource management, continuous education and high-fidelity simulation drills can effectively strengthen first aid knowledge, skills and process execution, maintain the medical team's first aid capabilities, improve the safe care of pregnant women, and provide valuable reference for first aid training and process optimization in other units.
