Title: Implementation of clinical system integration: Alert & alarm management in post-acute pediatric skilled nursing facility

Abstract:

Patient safety and timely interventions are critical in healthcare settings. One significant challenge is ensuring rapid notification to clinical staff when a patient’s vital signs deviate from prescribed thresholds, which could indicate potential deterioration. This presentation discusses the implementation of an integrated clinical alert system designed to notify healthcare providers in real time when a patient's vital signs fall outside predefined safe parameters. The system leverages continuous monitoring devices that feed patient data to a handheld notification device. Through a combination of real-time data analytics and customizable alert thresholds, notifications are automatically generated when abnormalities are detected. These alerts are then delivered to the appropriate clinical team members via mobile devices and centralized workstations, ensuring swift response and minimizing delays in care.
Key components of this implementation include:

  • Seamless integration with existing hospital systems (EHRs, monitoring devices).
  • Configurable alert settings tailored to individual patient conditions and care protocols.
  • Workflow optimization to reduce alert fatigue and prioritize actionable alerts.
  • A feedback loop for continuous system improvement based on clinical outcomes and staff input.

We will highlight the benefits of this system, such as improved patient outcomes, reduced response times, and enhanced staff communication. Additionally, the presentation will address challenges encountered, including integration hurdles, the balancing of alert sensitivity, and the training required to maximize staff engagement. The implementation demonstrates that with well-designed clinical integration systems, patient safety can be significantly enhanced through timely, automated notifications. This approach represents a shift toward proactive, data-driven care, supporting clinical staff in delivering timely interventions and improving overall patient management.
