Exploring the pulmonary rehabilitation journey of postoperative lung cancer patients: A qualitative study and nursing implications

Oral · Virtual · Day 3

Abstract

About this talk

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation is essential for functional recovery of postoperative lung cancer patients. However, current nursing models often ignore patients’ stage-specific dynamic challenges and holistic needs throughout recovery. Therefore, this study visualized patients’ rehabilitation experiences using the patient journey map to inform the development of relevant clinical nursing interventions.

Objective: To identify the multidimensional needs of lung cancer patients during pulmonary rehabilitation based on the patient journey map, so as to provide evidence for optimizing whole-course pulmonary rehabilitation for lung cancer patients.

Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was adopted. Fifteen postoperative lung cancer patients were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Henan province between November 2025 and April 2026. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Colaizzi’s seven-step method was used for data analysis, and the patient journey map was developed.

Results: Along the care timeline, patients’ pulmonary rehabilitation needs were summarized into 21 themes from three dimensions including tasks, emotions, and clinical concerns, involving the initial establishment of postoperative rehabilitation cognition and other key contents. The patient journey map was finally constructed in this study.

Conclusion: Patients with lung cancer have dynamically changing pulmonary rehabilitation needs, with marked differences in rehabilitation tasks, emotional experiences and care pain points across stages. This study adopts journey mapping to visualize patients’ full rehabilitation experience, providing evidence for the development of staged and continuous pulmonary rehabilitation interventions. Clinically, rehabilitation guidance can be optimized according to patients’ priority needs at different stages. Psychological support and family empowerment should be emphasized to facilitate the continuous improvement of pulmonary rehabilitation care models for postoperative lung cancer patients.
