Effect of chewing gum on postoperative sore throat

Poster · In-Person · Day 1

Abstract

About this talk

Postoperative sore throat is a common discomfort following endoscopic nasal surgery. Although stimulation of salivary secretion may help alleviate postoperative oropharyngeal symptoms, evidence supporting chewing gum as a non-pharmacological intervention remains limited. Two Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) were critically appraised, and both demonstrated that postoperative chewing of xylitol gum was associated with improvement in postoperative sore throat. Based on the available evidence, xylitol chewing gum represents a simple, non-invasive intervention with potential feasibility and applicability in clinical practice
