My life with chronic kidney disease: Stories of spirituality and resilience

Oral · In-Person · Day 1

Abstract

About this talk

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a life-altering condition that affects not only the physical health of individuals but also their emotional, social, financial and spiritual well-being. This study explored the lived stories of persons with chronic kidney disease before diagnosis, at the time of diagnosis, and while undergoing hemodialysis using a narrative inquiry approach, guided by Connelly and Clandinin’s (2000) narrative analysis anchored in Roy’s Adaptation Model (RAM). Five participants aged 24 to 30 years old who had been undergoing hemodialysis for over six months were purposively selected. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, and participants were presented chronologically to capture their transitions, coping processes and adaptation throughout their illness journey. Findings revealed that prior to diagnosis, participants often misunderstood their symptoms. Attributing them to fatigue, stress or common illnesses. Upon diagnosis, participants experienced shock, fear, emotional distress and uncertainty as they confronted the reality of a chronic and lifelong condition. During hemodialysis, participants experienced persistent physical challenges such as fatigue, weakness, dietary restriction, and treatment complications. Psychosocial struggles including anxiety, altered self-image, emotional exhaustion, financial instability and dependence on support systems were seen. Despite these challenges, participants gradually developed resilience through acceptance, lifestyle adjustments, spirituality, emotional regulation, and support from family, partners, peers, and healthcare providers. The study highlights the adaptation to CKD is a continuous and multidimensional process influenced by both internal coping mechanisms and external support systems. Findings emphasize the importance of holistic and patient-centered interventions that address not only the physical aspects of CKD but also the psychosocial, financial, and spiritual needs of individuals undergoing hemodialysis.
