Nurturing nurses to lead innovations and research in a hospital setting in Saudi Arabia

Oral · In-Person · Day 1

Abstract

About this talk

Background: King Saud University Medical city sought to advance nursing from reactive practice to a nurse-led innovation culture aligned with its professional practice model, strategic priorities, and magnet journey. This initiative addressed the need for structured support, visibility, and governance for frontline nursing ideas.

Aim: To establish a sustainable framework enabling nurses to lead evidence-based practice, nursing research, and quality improvement initiatives that improve nurse satisfaction, patient experience, and nursing-sensitive outcomes.

Methods: In 2021, the nursing affairs innovation committee implemented a standardized proposal pathway through shared governance councils. The committee reviewed submissions, guided project development, monitored implementation, facilitated recognition, and embedded achievements within awards and performance appraisal processes.

Findings: Since implementation, nurses have completed 26 evidence-based practice projects, 63 research studies, 23 publications, and 306 quality improvement initiatives. Several projects received local, national, and international recognition, demonstrating stronger nurse engagement, scholarly productivity, and organizational improvement capacity.

Recommendations: A formal innovation infrastructure empowers nurses, accelerates evidence translation, strengthens professional practice, and advances care excellence. Continued mentorship, rigorous outcome evaluation, leadership support, recognition, and wider dissemination are recommended to sustain innovation and Magnet readiness.

Keywords: Nursing Innovation; Evidence-Based Practice; Nursing Research; Quality Improvement; Magnet Readiness
