Psychosocial adjustment personas among colorectal cancer patients with a stoma: A qualitative study

Oral · In-Person · Day 1

Abstract

About this talk

Objective: To identify psychosocial adjustment personas among colorectal cancer patients with a stoma and provide insights for personalized supportive care.

Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted involving colorectal cancer patients with a stoma. The study site is a specialized wound ostomy clinic in a tertiary care hospital in mainland China. Data were collected from February to August 2023. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to explore participants experience of psychosocial adjustment. Content analysis was performed using NVivo 11.0 to code the data, extract themes, and construct personas based on core experiential dimensions.

Results: Twenty patients completed the interviews. Three distinct patient personas emerged:
(1) active reconstruction type: accepted their condition, actively adjusted to life with a stoma, and gradually reconstructed their daily lives;
(2) withdrawal-avoidance type: exhibited persistent negative emotions, struggled to accept the stoma, and adopted avoidant coping behaviors;
(3) striving adjustment type: experienced recurrent emotional fluctuations, failed to fully accept stoma-related changes, relied heavily on family care, and actively reduced social participation.

Conclusions: Psychosocial adjustment personas among colorectal cancer patients with a stoma exhibit considerable diversity. Healthcare providers should comprehensively assess patients’ psychosocial adjustment personas to develop personalized support strategies, promote long-term physical and psychological rehabilitation, and improve patients’ quality of life.
