About this talk
Nursing education stands at a strategic inflection point: preparing nurses to function within existing systems is no longer sufficient. Reimagining Nursing Education calls for a fundamental shift toward educating nurses as innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, politically competent professionals, policy influencers, and leaders capable of transforming health systems and the wider ecosystems in which health is created. Grounded in the WHO State of the World’s Nursing 2025, the WHO Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery extended to 2030, and the ICN Seven Powers of Nursing, this speech proposes a Nursing Transformation Ecosystem that connects clinical excellence to AI and digital capability; digital capability to research, innovation and advanced practice; and these capabilities to leadership, political competence, governance and policy influence—ultimately converting professional capability into measurable health, economic and societal value. The model places nurses within an interconnected ecosystem of education, practice, research, technology, government, regulation, communities, industry and international institutions, enabling them to move from knowledge to innovation, from innovation to policy, and from policy to system transformation. It challenges traditional boundaries of nursing leadership, positioning nurses not only within health sector leadership but also in government, legislatures, parliaments, national and international boards, academia and broader societal governance. With growing evidence of the economic return from nursing education, practice and research, the speech argues that the future of nursing lies in transforming professional power into health-system impact, economic growth, national development, resilience, global health security, and societal advancement—positioning nursing as a strategic force for healthier, stronger and more secure nations and a more resilient world.
