The treatment of patients who have suffered physical trauma, such as a vehicle accident, a fall, or a gunshot wound, is the focus of the specialist nursing discipline known as trauma nursing. Trauma nurses offer these patients full treatment, including evaluating their health, offering first aid, giving drugs and fluids, and carrying out tests and procedures. Along with information on injury prevention and services, they also offer the patient's family and themselves emotional and psychological support. The field of trauma nursing includes all the numerous functions that nurses play in the process of caring for a trauma patient. Nurses who work in emergency rooms and other stressful hospital settings are referred to as "trauma nurses."
