Pain relief, analgesia, and pain control are all aspects of medicine and health care that deal with pain in a variety of contexts, from the acute and straightforward to the chronic and complex. In the course of their routine care, the majority of doctors and other healthcare providers offer some form of pain management. For more complicated cases of pain, however, they may also seek further assistance from pain medicine, a branch of medicine that is only concerned with treating pain. Whether someone is suffering from acute or chronic pain, pain treatment frequently employs a multidisciplinary approach to lessen their suffering and enhance their quality of life. Analgesia, the treatment for generalised pain relief, frequently only addresses acute pain; however, controlling chronic pain involves other factors. Doctors, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and physician assistants comprise the conventional pain management team. Other mental health professionals and massage therapists may also be part of the team. When a patient receives pain therapy from a single practitioner utilising drugs such as opioids (analgesics) and sometimes also anxiolytics, the pain can sometimes subside quickly once the underlying trauma or disease has healed. However, the coordinated efforts of a pain management team are often required for the effective management of chronic (long-term) pain. Effective pain management may not always result in total pain alleviation. Instead, it typically refers to achieving a sufficient quality of life despite suffering pain, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including by minimising discomfort.
