Hepatology is the branch of medicine dedicated to the study and management of liver-related diseases. Hepatologists specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. With the liver playing a central role in metabolism and detoxification, hepatology is integral to overall health. Hepatologists employ advanced diagnostic tools, including imaging and liver biopsy, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care. As a field at the intersection of internal medicine and gastroenterology, hepatology contributes to advancements in liver research, transplantation, and the development of innovative therapies.
Hepatology encompasses the diagnosis and management of cirrhosis, a late stage of scarring of the liver tissue. Complications of cirrhosis include portal hypertension, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and liver cancer. Hepatologists are integral to the liver transplantation process, from patient evaluation to post-transplant care. They assess candidates for transplantation, manage the transplant waiting list, and provide long-term follow-up care for transplant recipients.
